Being persistent in PR

Standard

persistant public relationsWhen it comes to Public Relations, you need to know what you are doing and you need to be aware of what is happening at all times. It is vital that you are top of anything and everything at all times because you never know what could be around the corner. Most of all, you need to be persistent and you need to be patient. One might not associate those two words together with one another, but they go hand in hand when it comes to having good PR skills. You need to be persistent and not take no for an answer. It is an incredibly competitive game and one needs to be one step ahead of the competition at all times.

That means making numerous phone calls, text messages, faxes, and emails and following up daily to keep up to date with those. It means staying in touch with your contacts and not taking no for an answer. Then after that, you need to have the patience to simply relax and see what happens. It can be hard to relax while being persistent, but it’s a big part of the job. Patience is a virtue as they say and one must know that these sorts of things don’t happen overnight. They take time in order for them to be executed properly. Your time will come and you will get your answers at the right time, but it’s not going to appear out of the clear blue sky.

It’s a delicate balance, but it is one that must be achieved in order to succeed in the PR world. Now, more than ever, it is quite competitive and there are only so many jobs to go around. Because of this, one must be focused at all times on the task at hand and that is getting results for you and your company. This involves building relationships and being reliable. You need to say what you mean and stand behind it. This is how they trust you and know you are someone they want to do business with at the end of the day. You won’t win every battle, but if you keep at it, remain persistent and never give up, anything is possible and you can achieve greatness for you and your PR firm. Just remember to be patient, stay in the battle, and keep up with it.

In my opinion PR is in the same room as marketing, it is storytelling. The good storyteller makes sure that they are in control of the story at all times.

I think you make a great point in this blog post. Participating in public relations means being ambitious, persistent and developing a pretty thick skin. Dealing with clients of all different kinds means preparing yourself to be able to be ready for anything and most of the time that also means thinking on your toes. You also make a great point about creating a balance because, while it’s important to be persistent, knowing when to step back and be patient is equally as important because you don’t want to scare away your clients (or potential clients) by being overly pushy. In PR, it’s important to be persistent and patient, but never pushy.
